After finding various robot designs, we looked for lessons that we could potentially make using them.

I looked through the Common Core State Standard for Mathematics for the topics covered from grades 5-8 and tried finding related activities to integrate our robots in.

Some useful resources I found that we could use our robots for:

All the robots being used in these sources are quite expensive. So, I thought we could maybe use our robots as cheaper alternatives.

Some of the activities I found or created were:

  • Geometry: The snailbot has various shapes in its 2D outline. We could use this to teach properties of different shapes and how to identify them. Snailbot
  • Measurement and Units, Speed, Statistics, Accuracy and Estimation: The robot car can be used to teach loads of topics. Students can measure distances using different units and the time taken to travel those distances. Using this information, they can measure the speed of the car. Finally, they can calculate the mean, median and mode of the speeds of all the cars in the class. Robot Car measuring distance
  • Surface Area, Chemical Reactions, Thrust: In an experiment I found on Teach Engineering called 'Aqua-Thrusters!', a chemical reaction is used to demonstrate what thrust is. I thought we could add a paper boat onto this set up to make the activity easier to visualize and also teach some more geometry lessons.
  • Adaptation of Animals: In another activity I found on Teach Engineering called Arctic Animal Robot, a walking robot is used to demonstrate how animals adapt to their environment. If we make the elephant robot walk or find a new simple design for a waljing robot, we can perform a similar activity.
  • Ratio and Proportion: I found an activity called 'I need a larger recipe' and thought we could turn it into an activity like 'I need a larger zoo'. Students will first build small scale zoos in groups and then use ratio and proportion to scale it up to a larger zoo for the entire class.

I compiled all the sources in a document with more lesson plans, activities and their details.

Currently, we are working on making the lesson plans for the robot car, as those lesson plans have the most detail and a lot of potential. We will then continue with finding and making lesson plans for the other robots.
