Printable robotics is an upcoming field that focuses on the inexpensive development of customizable robots. In order for this process to become mainstream, the process by which robotics are designed must become much simpler: the mechanical, electrical, and software components must be readily available and easily accessible to the everyday user.
The objective of this research is to study the integration of super-coiled polymer (SCP) actuators with printable robotics. Research on conductive nylon-sewing thread has shown that when twisted to form coils these threads can have capabilities equivalent to or even greater than human muscle. Therefore, the goal is to create actuators that are easily replicable and may easily be assimilated into printable robots.
